I have a picture on my wall that my parents got me many years ago. It’s just a simple picture of horses running through a desert-like field. It’s all drawn in pencil but the detail is quite impressive without any color. However, if you look closer, the picture is covered in scripture references, notes from my parents to me, notes even to the artist’s children. The more you look at it, you see all types of hidden details that were never there at first glance. I have had it for almost twenty years and still find new parts of it when I look at it.

I think the Bible is very similar.

Oftentimes we will attempt to just read over it quickly and not get the complexity that can be hidden inside. Possibly, we even mistake its meaning for something different because we don’t always understand its background, language, and references.

Our summer theme this year was Reveal, and this was the focus: that when we take a moment to dig deeper, some of the mysteries of the Bible are revealed to us. We also focused on understanding that it’s okay that God is a mystery to us and always will be. How Christ’s and our sacrifices can help us see the world in a different way. How His Spirit can guide us to understandings we simply can’t find on our own. As well as how the Church can help to guide and strengthen our beliefs.

My favorite part of the summer was students from each camp coming up and asking for the WiFi password so they could try to find more details about the verses they were reading. This could have been a clever ploy just to get the WiFi password, but I honestly felt that many of them were trying to understand the Bible on their own.

As you spend time in your own studies this fall, I challenge you to dig deeper to find what might be revealed to you.

About Tanglewood Tales

Tanglewood Tales is said to be the origin of the name for Tanglewood Texas. According to the Texas State Historical Association, it was named by two sisters reading the book “Tanglewood Tales” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which is a collection of retellings of classic myths.
